The revenue goal

Set a yearly target once and Home shows whether you are ahead of it or behind it today, in dollars — how the pace, the projection and the monthly figure are worked out, and who can change the goal.

The Revenue goal card on Home is a yearly target you set once, and a pace bar that says whether you are ahead of it or behind it today. It leads with pace, in dollars, because “$180,000 of $500,000” means nothing without the date — 36% is triumphant in April and a disaster in November.

Everything on the card is worked out from the one number you type. Nothing else is stored: the monthly and weekly targets, the pace and the projection are all derived, so they can never drift from the annual figure.

Overview

The goal belongs to the company, not to a person: one target, set by an owner or administrator, shown to everyone who can see the dashboard's money. Progress is measured on the same figure as Revenue this month — invoices marked paid, by the date they were paid — widened to the year, so the goal card and the revenue card can never tell two different stories about the same money.

With no goal set, an owner or administrator sees the card as the prompt to set one — “Set a target for the year and the dashboard will track your pace toward it.” with a Set a revenue goal button — and everyone else sees no card at all. There is no dead prompt for someone who cannot act on it.

How to set, change or clear the goal

  1. Open Home and scroll to The detail. Press Set a revenue goal, or the pencil on an existing card (Change goal).
  2. Type the year's target in the $ … / year box. As you type, the card says what that is per month and per week — “That's about $41,667/month, $9,615/week.”
  3. Press Save. The figure is rounded to whole dollars and capped at $100,000,000, so a fat-fingered extra zero is caught rather than stored and quietly making every target impossible.
  4. To remove it, open the editor again and press Clear goal. Saving a blank or a zero clears it the same way.

Setting or clearing the goal is written to the Activity Log as “Set the revenue goal to …” or “Cleared the revenue goal”, under the name of whoever did it.

How the pace is worked out

  • Expected by now is the annual goal multiplied by the fraction of the year that has elapsed, counted in calendar days on the UTC calendar — 366 in a leap year, so the maths never drifts by a day.
  • On pace means revenue to date is within 2% of that expected figure either way — a tolerance band, so the card does not flicker between ahead and behind on every sale.
  • Projecting holds today's daily rate for the rest of the year. In the first days of January one big job projects to a wild number, which is why the projection sits in small type beside the monthly target rather than as the headline.
  • The monthly target is the annual over 12, flat; weekly is over 52; daily is over 365. No seasonal curve is invented — a painter's March and December are not the same, and the card does not pretend to know by how much.

Who can see it

Anyone who can see the dashboard's money — the See prices switch — sees the card once a goal exists. Only an owner or an administrator can set, change or clear it: the server refuses everyone else, and the pencil is not drawn for them. A Manager sees the pace but cannot move the target.

The words on this card are not yet in the translation catalogue. It reads in English — “Revenue goal”, “On pace”, “behind pace” — whatever language the rest of the app is in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set a monthly goal instead?

Not directly. You set the year and the card derives the month (the annual over 12) and the week (over 52). A stored monthly figure would drift from the annual one the moment either was edited.

Does the goal count quotes accepted or invoices sent?

Neither. It counts invoices marked paid this year, by the date they were paid — the same measure as Revenue this month.

Why does the projection look wrong in January?

It holds the daily rate so far for the rest of the year, and a few days of data make a poor rate. It settles as the year fills in.
